The Non-Therapist: How To Help As If You Were A Pro (Or Even More So!)
It does not take a boat load of advanced degrees to be helpful. It requires compassion and a few key skills. This is a how-to course for people who are not formally trained as professional therapists but find themselves counselling anyway.
Learning from a combination of recorded information and hands-on group classes on-line, you will be able to:
- Reach different types of people, draw them out and help them explore their issues with easy-to-use listening techniques that can be helpful immediately and can be used quickly, and tips on what not to do.
- Stop worrying about whether or not they might say the wrong thing and make things worse.
- Feel confident that they know how to choose the best regional resources to refer someone who needs more help than they can give.
- Feel confident that they can respond appropriately to common issues that frequently pop up in a counsellor’s office, with user-friendly tools that readers can use with their clients.
- Supervisors or HR people or union reps can feel satisfied that their support of an employee, or colleague in their issues can result in enhanced work performance and work
- Professional helpers can feel satisfied that their new (or renewed) skills complement and contribute to the other services that they offer.
- Lay helpers can feel confident that they can assist their community by filling a service gap effectively.
- Find it easy to seamlessly incorporate their new skills into their current job or volunteer position.

Sharing your favourite strategies online with other frontline helpers, you will be able to:
- Assist your client to asses her relationship, identify abusive patterns and create a vision of what she wants instead.
- Support your client while she asseses any obstacles to happiness, and plans to overcome them.
- Research regional resources and assist your client to access needed supports.
- Teach your client a technique to manage and perhaps improve her relationship and to decide whether she needs to leave for her safety.
- If she needs to leave an abusive relationship, support your client to overcome obstacles to leaving and help her escape to create a new satisfying safe life.
- Help her learn to stay aware of the dynamics in a new relationship and identify early signs of abusive patterns.
- Assist her to access therapy to heal from the abuse and move on with confidence.
